Inaugural Commencement
The Visesha Pooja festival, a significant and cherished event, was ceremoniously inaugurated by TTD on April 8, 1991.
Every Monday, after the second bell, the utsava vigraha (processional deity) is brought to the mantap for the 'Chaturdasa Kalasa Visesha Pooja,' involving 14 kalasas (sacred pots). With Sri Malayappa Swami's permission, the archakas conduct ankurarpana (seed sowing) and punyaha vachanam (purification rites). During the recitation of the Panchasukatas (Sri, Bhu, Nila, Purusha, Narayana), Tirumanjanam (ritual bathing) is performed on the utsava murtis. Seven vessels contain gingerly oil, milk, curd, ghee, akshatas (holy rice grains), darbha (sacred grass), and panchagavya (five cow products); the other seven hold sudhodaka (pure water). The seva culminates with Abhisheka Harati and Purnahuti. Naivedya is presented to the deity. Participants with arjita seva tickets receive vastra bahumanam: for men, an upper cloth (uttariyam), one laddu, and one vada; for women, a blouse piece, one laddu, and one vada.

During the Vishesha Pooja in Tirumala, a strict dress code is observed. Men are required to remove their shirts and vests during the Seva, reinstating them after its conclusion. Women are expected to adorn themselves in traditional attire, such as a saree with blouse, a Punjabi Dress with Dupatta, a Chudidhar with Dupatta, or a Half Saree. These guidelines are imperative to maintaining the ceremony's sanctity and honoring tradition. Each attire choice carries cultural significance, fostering an atmosphere of reverence and devotion. By adhering to these guidelines, participants demonstrate respect for the sacredness of the occasion, contributing to the spiritual ambiance of the Vishesha Pooja in Tirumala.
The Homam ceremony, devotees eagerly await their turn for Darshan, the sacred sight of the deity. Those with Visesha pooja tickets, granted special privileges, merge with the regular queue near the Dwajasthambham, the temple flagstaff. This amalgamation ensures a fair and efficient process.
Despite the initial separation, all devotees are united in their devotion as they patiently await their moment with the divine. Remarkably, the wait from the merging point to experiencing Darshan itself spans a modest 25 minutes, a testament to the temple's thoughtful organization and reverence for devotees' time and devotion.
